Dave,
when you convert from one color space
to another you will have a conversion
in data that will visually affect an image.
If you make the conversion with a profile,
the color will be accurate. For example
if an image has a SWOP profile attached to
it and you convert the image to newsprint
using a SNAP profile, the printed product
will match your proof.
If possible, get the raw image and then
convert it with your press profile.
The advantage of scanning and color correcting
in an RGB color space is two-fold:
Color size
1.the rgb gamut is larger, so you maintain
more tone and color in the image than correcting
in the cmyk space.
2. Portibiltiy
If you scan into cmyk, the image is locked into
that color space. If you have a raw rgb image
you can separate it using your SWOP profile,
newsprint profile, gravure profile...etc...without
have to rescan
I hope this helps.

Hi to you all,
I need a little help.
I have CMYK files with CMYK coated profiles. If I convert them to RGB
and back to CMYK i get fairly significant changes - 10 to 15%. Have I
got something wrong or is this a common thing that has not been fixed
yet.
Mostly we scan in CMYK, edit in CMYK and output film for conventional
printing.
Any help would be welcome.
