Well, this is how I do it:
Got to the curves dialog and uncheck all but the uncorrected curves. These
are the "native" gamma curves of the display. You can run thru the
individual RGB curves to find the one that's roughly the average of the
other two.
Now turn on the target curves and start trying different gamma values by
selecting them from the main Optical screen. You'll probably have to try
custom values to get a curve that overlays the native curve exactly.
Probably a bit crude but should give you a gamma value accurate to within
about .05 or so. Use this custom gamma value as your new target value. I
simply use Precal to find the native color temp.
