Probably a bit crude but should give you a gamma value accurate to within
about .05 or so. Use this custom gamma value as your new target value. I

Is it necessary to manage the curves in such a way? I appreciate that the LCD's respond differently than a CRT but if anything are they probably not fairly linear? Would that not be something we would want to change to 2.2?
