Dark Cinema

The following e-mail is forwarded for your comments from my friend who is
having difficulties with the Eye-One Pro monitor profiling on his Cinema
Display. To summarize: When he follows the G/M dialogs, and matches up
all the arrows in the profiling process, he ends up with a very dark
screen. The monitor->print matching seems to be good, but his formerly
bright Cinema Display is a real annoyance for all the other work he does
on it. Terry Wyse suggested "tell him to ignore the stupid arrow
indicators for the
brightness and contrast in the Eye-One software and just crank 'em up. The
profile will still be good", but it seems that doing this throws the
monitor->print equation off - at least in the brightness comparison.

I have two comments: 1) This seems a bit flaky (referring to G/M, not
you, Terry), to purchase a profiling package, and then, to make it work,
ignore some of its controls to make it work, and 2) It is my
understanding that whatever color temperature, gamma, or brightness you
choose for your display, the profile's characterization of the monitor in
this condition is what Photoshop uses, via ColorSync, to render the data
correctly on screen. At least that's the way it works in my experience.

So my friend, David, took his questions back to the G/M dealer, and here
is how the rep responded. BTW, the Epson was 3rd-party profiled with
ProfileMaker 3.1. Any comments?

Tony
