I've had great results on my dual-USB iBook using the Eye-One and
ProfileMaker. I set the gamma to 2.2, 6500k, and the results are
remarkable. A dead-on match, which I was very skeptical of getting on
such a limited device. The only control on the iBook is brightness.
Though it did take me a couple of tries, I finally was able to get a
very good profile.

The package that my friend has is the monitor profiling software with

work on.
If he's using the Eye-One Monitor or Eye-One Match package, he should
probably choose "Warm White" (5000K) and "Mac Gamma" for starters. If
it's
anything like my G3 PowerBook LCD (probably not!), it'll measure about
4700-5000K for white point. If he opted for the Gretag Profilemaker
Monitor
package, he'd have a bunch more control over white point, gamma,
luminance,
etc. Oh, and tell him to ignore the stupid arrow indicators for the
brightness and contrast in the Eye-One software and just crank 'em up.
The
profile will still be good.
I tried to download Eye-One information from the G/M site, but there is
little information there. This all sounds to me like he may be
missing a
step, or that the Eye-One package is not the right tool that he
needs. I
mean, I can set my Sony at 80cd/m2 or 100cd/m2 and OptiCal doesn't
care.
The profiles render images in Photoshop correctly no matter.
What's the answer? Should he be chuck the Eye-One for a more effective
profiler?
The Eye-One is fine but he may find the Gretag monitor profiling not to
his
liking. I've always found it seems to plug shadow detail no matter what
instrument I use (Spectrolino and Eye-One). I'm playing around with
ICCDisplay by Profile City and the Eye-One and am getting better results
with it. FWIW, I get superior results with OptiCAL and the 'Lino, I just
wish they'd support the Eye-One and I'd have the perfect combo in my
book.
