Our advertising agency of about 130 people with 20 designers all on Macs
needs some serious help. Up until about a year ago, the majority of our work
flow was all film based. With the increased popularity of computer to plate
and digital proofing we have come to the realization that we need to
implement a colour management system.
Our current workflow involves digital stock photography, digital high end
photography from local photographers as well as traditional scans from our
local film house. We do extensive photo retouching and colour correction to
most of our images. All final art files are prepared in Quark Xpress.
Almost 100% of our ads are delivered in digital format (most as pdfx) along
with a digital proof (from various local suppliers) all across North
America.
A large percentage of our offset print jobs are now being printed computer
to plate at various local printers. They all use different systems for
proofing.
I have been doing a lot of reading but I still don't quite get it. We are
the furthest thing from a closed shop since our images all originate from
outside sources, all image editing and file prep is performed in-house, and
all final output and printing is performed outside at varying different
suppliers.
My question to the group is what do I do next. I am unaware of any local
consultants that can come in and help get us organized. I am the one who
usually has to do all the research, purchasing and implementation but my
time is limited do to the fact that my main role is that of Senior Art
Director. If you could recommend any books or point me to any relevant
websites that would be a big help. If you know of any consultants in our
area (we are located about an hour outside of Toronto) that would be great
as well.
We currently have a Xerox Docucolor 12 connected to a Splash Rip that we use
for layout approval only. We are looking at adding a second Docucolor 12
connected to an Imation Match print RIP to use for internal color proofing
as well as to generate final proofs internally to send along with our
digital ad files. Does anyone have any experience with this device for
proofing and is this a good recommendation.
Thanks
