In the book "Color in Business, Science, and Industry" by Judd and
Wyszecki, on page 314, they write "There are about 10 million definitely
distinguishable colors."

In "The Measurement of Appearance", Second edition, edited by Hunter and
Harold, page 189 they state "In a side-by-side match the eye can
distinguish approximately 10 million colors, ..."

Check the references listed in these books and you will probably find
the original papers for these numbers.
