MSD,
I haven't looked or seen any papers lately about the number of colors a
person can perceive but that9s because that information is reasonably
standard and hasn9t changed for years, (and if it has please let me know).
You can do the math for eight bit images on a computer and come up with 16+
million colors, but when you get to the practicality of it you don9t get to
see millions of colors.
And while some might dispute this number, I find that for conventional four
color printing on a reasonably white substrate a human will perceive between
10 to 15 thousand colors and that is if the printer did a good job of
putting ink on paper. If you down grade the paper you perceive less colors.
As for hifi printing strategies, you do get more perceived colors and I
don9t have any numbers, that I have worked with, but my instincts tell me
you might get to perceive 25 to 30 thousand colors.
In all of the printing (ink on paper) scenarios one of the main factors is
the whiteness of the paper that aids in giving you a larger color gamut so
the eye can see more colors.
