I know this is a bit late, but the following scanners are very good
production scanners:
Heidelberg ImageDirect 665
Panasonic KVS2025, KVS2065, KVS6045
Xerox 620S
Over the course of its development, these have all been used by the
Heidelberg Digimaster 9110 as the scanning interface for its copier
function. They all provide (at the least) 600x600 spi with true 8-bit
grayscale. The ImageDirect 665 is about the size of a Honda Civic.
