I am curious to hear how digital print shops, using colour copiers
such as the Xerox DocuColor line, are dealing with colour mangement
issues.
We are currently implementing a colour management workflow at our
quick print shop. We have a Docucolor 2060 and DC12 with the Fiery
EX2000 RIP. I, like others, am attempting to profile the Fiery on top
of the EX2000 'profile'. I don't see this as a problem because the
fiery output profile system seems to be more like calibration curves
to keep the output consistent.
In order to get proper colour conversion for both raster and vector
graphics using custom profiles, I am looking into server software
(ICC Autoflow and iQueue) to convert colours to the final CMYK space
before sending to the Fiery. We also have a couple of 4-colour offset
presses, therefore, with 'RIP Independent' colour conversion, we will
be able simulate press output on the Fiery and colour manage our
offset output without the worry of different RIPs doing different
conversions.
As far as customer supplied files, we will be assuming a default RGB
working space unless a profile is embedded. I'm not sure what to do
with supplied CMYK files, either convert from a standard US Sheetfed
Coated or send the CMYK data unconverted. Sending unconverted CMYK
data could be problematic if the job has to be re-printed 6 months
later on a different device since there is no common CMYK reference
space. Any comments would be appreciated.
