When we purchased our Pantone swatchbooks (Survival Kit), it came with a
disk entitles 'Color Systems Update, Version 1.0). It sat undisturbed in my
desk until today when one of my designers wanted to add some spot color
swatches to Illustrator 9.0.
So, I popped the disk in, opened the file and was greeted with AI9's new
dialgoue that says that the file has both CMYK and RGB objects and that I'm
only allowed to play in one or the other. So I chose CMYK and was then
greeted with a profile dialogue asking what I want to do.. (don't manage,
assign working profile, pick your own).
Since we spent the summer bringing in all our new color management toys... I
figured we ought do this right. The PMS selection in AI9 is a bit dated and
I'd like to bring in the whole library... but the fact that there is a
conversion happening (from which color space is it coming) when I open the
file... and potentially again when it asks about profiles... it seemed
prudent to ask around first.
So... is it possible to use the files on the Color Systems Update disk to
get swatches into AI9 that have the optimal CMYK combinations in the
appropriate color space for reasonable on screen approximation of the spot
colors (We're not quite ready to jump on the complete RGB workflow
bandwagon, though that is an eventual goal)? If it's not... is there a place
that I can get 'calibrated' PMS swatches for AI9 and PS6 without spending
all day with the Spectrolino and my physical PMS swatchbooks?
Thanks,
-james
