I have a photographer colleague who wishes to simply layout

I don't know if anyone else on the list has tried this recently, but
with Quark 3.3 I went up and down the walls trying to print high res
color accurate photos to a desktop Epson. I even bought the (ugh) Epson
Postscript RIP. Simply put, it doesn't work. You only get a CMYK preview
lo-res image out of the printer.
You can, however, accomplish this task from Adobe Illustrator 8 or
higher. First flatten and convert your photos/artwork in PS5 profile to
profile/PS6 convert to profile, using the profile of your destination
printer. Then layout your type and photos/artwork. in IL8. Color
settings are file?color settings?IL monitor default, printer default,
adobe CMS, rel. color, use embedded profile unchecked and simulate
colors on dislay unchecked. Photos will look wierd and terribly
off-color when imported this way, but ignore that. layout your type,
etc.,then print the pages on the same inkjet with no color adjustment,
or whatever settings you used when the printer was profiled, and you
will get excellent color matching.
Just make sure you don't allow any secondary conversion of your
files. Changing the color settings in IL8 to get a good color display
seems to wreak havoc on the files color info when printed, in my
experience.
