At minimum I allocate about 3 times average filesize (uncompressed) to
Photoshop. But if the de hardisc keeps 'scratching' during work, I
allocate
more.
Virtual memory on OS level is turned off, as Photoshop has its own
virtual
memory and gets very slow otherwise.
If you run out of RAM, you might try decreasing the number of levels in
the
history palette.
As for your other questions: Obviously it all depends on how much memory
you
have available.

You can also tell how much Photoshop is "scratching" to your hard disk
(and therefore how much more ram you may to allocate) by using the
"Efficiency" display. This is at the bottom of the image window in PS6
in the same menu as the document size. This indicates the percentage of
time that is used for an action that took place in ram vs scratching to
the HD. If the percentage is below something like 80%, you should
allocate more ram to the app.
