I was wondering what the quality of an ICC profile that is generated from a
Photoshop CMYK table using PS6 is like when compared to one made using a
commercial profiling tool (eg PrintOpen).
According to the Photoshop developer team, CMYK profiles generated by
Photoshop should not be attempted for a number of printing
technologies.
I should add that the intents (aka blocks of numbers) in such a CMYK
profile all behave the same. This means that all intents from Lab to
CMYK and all intents from CMYK to Lab give the same result.
Also there is no support for averaging of the measurement data, no
support for instruments and no support for a patch set that
reasonably adequately fingerprints the process at hand.
At the moment the functionality is there as a legacy of the days when
Photoshop with its proprietary CMS was the only alternative to using
proprietary CMS architectures locked into scanner firmware. But the
fact that the functionality is still there doesn't mean you should
try to use it, which I would urge that you don't.
Should I get a proper ICC profile made for newsprint?
IFRA has an international standards-based ICC profile tested at 80
sites in Europe. This ICC profile is made with ProfileMaker 3 and not
with Photoshop.
You should be able to obtain this output profile from your local IFRA
organization.
