ProfileMaker does very well with the 288-patch target.
Sure, it does many things well, but that isn't a reason to recommend
non-CMYK, non-PostScript proofing.
Just because Photoshop does GIF, you probably wouldn't recommend
on-line color fidelity fashion catalogues with this format?
We are not using tools purpose-built for the graphic arts market any
more. This is both a bane and a blessing. The blessing is the freedom
of choice. The bane is that we have to unearth all manner of built-in
assumptions and hobble ourselves cobbling together odd workflows.

Whether the methodology of using a postscript CMYK rip (BEST 4.2.3) with hot

BESTColor is a PostScript RIP, and you can send it both RGB and CMYK
like you can any other PostScript RIP. It is not limited to RGB only.
