My RGB images are being used in a low budget print job via the Xerox
Docucolor printer. Proofs from several sources vary a lot but the bureau
that has produced the best page layout graphics renders the images with
washed out highlights and oversaturated mid tones. They advertise that they
are a color managed shop but when pressed say that no profiles are available
for the Docucolor. Their color management seems to be an internal system
based only on Pantone colors and represented to me only vaguely.
The machine converts images to CMYK. The operator said that it would be
better to send them CMYK files "but the files would be lacking in color
after the conversion". They couldn't give any other set-up options for the
conversions but my generic default conversion didn't look a whole lot
different than the original RGB, certainly not as bad as fortold. One more
critical insight from the operator was that any percentage under 20% would
go to white in the final output.
This seems to be the opposite of dot gain so I've not had much luck plugging
a custom dot gain curve into the set-up. I'm considering adjusting the CMYK
images with a straight line curve starting at 20% but the image looks awful
on screen. I realize that what's on screen may not matter in this case but
I'm hoping someone has insight into a better way to go about printing to the
Docucolor.
I've seen other good quality Docucolor images from these same files so there
must be a trick to make it all happen at once.
Thanks in advance for your help. If this doesn't fit with the colorsync
theme it's only because of widespread resistance of many service bureaus.
