I am interested in provoking discussion on the topic because up until
now I have been unable to determine the reasoning behind the choice
of the "desc" tag for this use.

One of the problems with the current situation is that these profiles do not appear correctly in application menus, including Photoshop menus.

Whether it is easy or hard to modify an existing profile I could not say, but from a functional point of view the situation is not ideal.
