I called Northwest this morning to check the status of e-tickets,
check-in procedures, and luggage. The answer was that much of this is
still up in the air (not a pun).
Northwest said that they will continue to use e-tickets, although the
check-in and luggage requirements are in flux. Check-in has been running
from 2 to 6 hours in length, although they said that things are settling
in the 2 hour range. The agent said that 2 hours would be minimum, at
this time, if you expect to make a flight.
As far as carry-on's go, what you can or cannot bring on the airplane is
being determined by the airport. Currently, Northwest has several
locations, including Minneapolis, that will not allow any carry-on items.
She advised to check with the airport, prior to departure, to see what
restrictions are in place. When I asked what would happen if Madison (my
point of departure) did allow carry-on's and Minneapolis did not (my
connection to San Francisco), she replied that it was currently unclear
as to how that would be handled.
In other words, it's confusion out there, and the best bet might be to
expect the worst; arrive very early and carry nothing.
