In most of the color management literature I've read, the ideal Color
Management System has all 3 elements of the workflow profiled - scanner,
monitor, and printer. I've also been told by peers that it is too much work
for too little benefit to take the time in profiling a scanner. We
currently work with profiles on our monitors and printers with great
success. However, our scanner (an ICG 360 drum) is not profiled. Most of
the time, this means that the image in ScanXact (the scanner's software) is
different from the image when it is opened in PhotoShop 6 after scanning to
disk. The Monitor Match program that is supposed to match the two up isn't
very effective. ScanXact II, however, is now ICC compatible and we are
considering investing in it if we could get greater accuracy with the
scanner, and thus save time later on in color corrections.
Does anyone have an opinion on whether or not profiling our scanner would
be a significant benefit? I would be especially interested in anyone having
experience in particular with the ICG drum scanners and ScanXact software.
It seems to me that if we could have more accuracy from the start (in the
scan), we could increase our speed, accuracy, and profitability
significantly.
Thanks!
