The Piezography Quadtone system comes with a collection of
pre made profiles for various papers. There are about 25 or
more included profiles. Some are for popular papers such as
Arches and Concord Rag and others are for specialty papers
that are available from Jon Cone.
For unsupported papers you can print out the supplied 21
step wedge using any of the included profiles and then
evaluate the results for a given paper and profile choice.
Also, since you are dealing with only black ink and 3 shades
of gray, I don't believe you could build profiles with
traditional software anyway.
Paper choice plays a big roll with how black is your max
black - Black, on Arches, is more of a dark Gray, where some
of Jon's special papers will produce a Blacker Black. Paper
color also plays a roll in the tone of the finished print -
does it have a Selenium Toned look, or a Cooler Black Tone
look - and is indeed the only way with a Quadtone system to
achieve a >toned< print.
