I'd create a full black to white RGB gray gradiant, to really see what the
printer can do (use Photoshop's gradiant tool with the picker colors reset to
B&W). You methodology is fine. The thing most likely to cause problems (other
than a bad output profile) is the temporal nature of laser based systems...
the results may change with the weather, temperature, and especially the
humidity.
