Now I am curious.

How do profiles become available in the colorsync control panel?

My Colorsync version (2.6.1) only has Heidelberg CMM or Automatic as a choice. What does Automatic do?

Sorry, the comments apply to ColorSync 3 or later. CMMs are typically loaded as extensions.

Automatic lets the profile call its preferred CMM, if available.
