Larry,
EFI (who makes the controller) is very good at making profiles that kill any
semblance of gray balance...and I have a feeling it is because the copiers
themselves (no matter who the manufacturer) can't hold gray balance to save
their fuser rollers. Whether you end up converting the job at the
workstation via a profile or at the RIP via ColorWise settings (RGB Setup,
Rendering Style, etc.), the only real gray you get is if RGB=0 (and that's
only if you have Pure Black Text and Graphics set to ON).
I have had decent success with preserving gray only on a Windows
workstation, and that's only if I force complete RGB during the document
creation process and check the box in AdobePS 4.4x to use PostScript gray.
On a Mac, it is severely frustrating (both from my production standpoint and
supporting picky color customers like myself) because everything tones
unless the color is specifically a grayscale (and not RGB).
