Technically I think most R&D types would argue linear
space is the "right" thing. However, in terms of
visual result you often "get away with" working in
gamma space.
Years ago I worked on software at a well-known
animation studio. Their system performed ALL
operations -- digital ink and paint, color correction,
filtering, and compositing -- in 12 bit linear RGB
space. This system worked very very well.
Today I work at another well-known studio. With our
software we have the option of working in linear OR
gamma space. While we don't always choose linear
space, we know the consequences. This system also
works very very well.
Like most things in life you have a choice. There's
good technical reasons to work in linear space.
There's pragmatic reasons to get away with what you
can.
