I did post on Colorsync and got only one reply from someone who might work
for Gretag, extolling EyeOne Match.
I don't know if you are Mac or Windows. I am windows and have done some
research. Here is an update.
1. Itec/Colorblind (Matchbox, Colorblind Pro)
- no stated date for supporting EyeOne hardware, but they are
evaluating
- plan to support Spectrocam in their windows version <soon>;
exact date of soon not stated but it is work already under
way with a future planned release date
- they do support a linearization pass before generating the
profile
- Mac version already supports Spectrocam
- very helpful people, nice responsiveness
2. Praxisoft (CompassProfile)
- Mac only
- evaluating EyeOne hardware
- support a linearization pass and variable target size
3. Monaco (Proof 3.5, I didn't ask about Profiler, their pro product)
- planned support for EyeOne, work underway, probable release
this calendar year--announced at Print'01
- currently support Spectrocam (and of course, others)
- support a linearization pass
- Mac and Win
- responsive people
4. Colorvision (Profiler Pro)
- evaluating EyeOne hardware. no specific plan or date for
supporting it
- already support Spectrocam (and others)
- Mac and Win
- no linearization pass, but different target sizes may be chosen
- email@hidden reports to be experimenting with EyeOne hardware
using ProfilerMaker "Measure" to input data to Profiler Pro.
I am happy to let him carry on the good work and eagerly await
any insights he has.
- very good technical support and responsive
5. ProfileCity
- original developers of ColorBlind software, now on their own
- have just released an excellent CMM suite for Mac only
- support both Spectrocam and EyeOne (and others)
- this looks really good, but I am a Win guy
6. Gretag ProfileMaker Pro
- A. Rodney reports excellent results
- other firms evaluating it
- my dissatisfaction with "Match" and my relative success with
the much cheaper ColorVision makes me a skeptic, but this is
opinion, NOT information based on experience (full disclosure)
- support via email to .ch (Switzerland). responsive enough.
Photobition, a professional imaging firm (advertising, murals, other high
end work) has had very successful experience with the EyeOne device--very
generous and helpful people. ColorMall confirms that their customers have
had excellent results with both Spectrocam and EyeOne--very responsive and
helpful. I should also mention Steve Upton at Chromix who answered lots of
questions with no particular hope of selling anything--which I rewarded by
buying a bunch of stuff.
The state of the art is probably not where it should be, but many earnest
people are struggling gamely to improve things. Photobition's comments were
interesting (paraphrased heavily): while CMM is a work in progress in its
early stages with much improvement still to occur, it is very much in the
right direction and already pays major dividends in getting better results
and significantly reducing trial and error. Some clients think that CMM
will color correct their less than stellar color images, which it will not
and cannot. But, from a production standpoint it is a time saver and a
money saver.
