Well, don't I feel a little silly now.
I did have enough memory, 1 gig of RAM assigned to Photoshop, and 6 gigs
of unfragmented scratch disk space.
I jumped through all the usual hoops in an attempt to solve my dilemma
-trashed preferences, turned off extensions, examined all my profiles,
etc.- and what it finally turned to be was that when a StyleWriter
printer, being shared over a network, was selected in the chooser this
caused the long delay before the file would display. Once I switched
back to the LaserWriter everything was fine.
Go figure, anyway, thanks to all for your help and suggestions.
