I'm sure I'll get nailed for this...but since the CoolPix 775 is a
"consumer" (not professional) digital camera, I would be willing to bet
that sRGB is a good match for the files coming off of the camera. Of
course, it is always ideal to have an accurate description (custom ICC
profile) of the device and assign that profile in Photoshop, but it could
be more trouble (and expense) than it is worth. My suggestion of assigning
different working spaces in Photoshop was merely an attempt to determine if
maybe one of the provided working spaces (call them profiles, whatever) was
a good match to the color space of your CoolPix. One of the cool things
about using Photoshop 6 is the ability to work in the file's tagged color
space instead of being required to convert to your standard working space.
You can do that too, but it is nice to not have to convert every file into
your working space.
We found (in our particular circumstances) that bypassing any kind of
camera color management and assigning Adobe RGB (1998) was a good match to
the color space of our cameras (which will remain nameless). Problem solved
with a minimum amount of effort! Of course we're still experimenting with
custom camera profiles. The different profiling packages available produce
variable results, but we are going to stick with it. I agree with Alex
Hermann's suggestion to maybe try Profile City's DCam module. It is a low
cost piece of software that is easy to use and may be just the thing you
need.
