You can choke the luminance of an LCD down to CRT levels, or you can raise
ambient light (and proofing light) levels and run the LCD at much higher
luminance... but yes, there are levels of LCD brighness that would be so out
of whack with specified ambient levels as to be impractical... like watching
TV in the dark.
