The big wigs at Epson told me exactly this! So for the kind of work I was
doing (a fellow basically printing "B&W images" by sending RGB data), it
wasn't a problem at all. Perhaps for those printing this way, using
Automatic might be the way to go. We found we got significantly better toal
range out of these prints using Automatic which was a huge benefit in this
case.

I've heard that the Auto assumes sRGB (although I found sending ColorMatch
RGB produced better output). And this issue doesn't appear to be with the
desktop consumer Epson printers! You will likely find identical results with
their Pro line (what a shame!).
