Forget about the checkerboard approach -- that's a nice test for video board
and monitor quality, but not suitable at all to verify calibration. Like you
did already observe, all kind of shit will happen for sure ...
If memory serves, early revisions of Knoll Gamma did use checkerboards as
well, and sometime Knoll/Adobe gave up onto that non-working pattern in
favor of a more realistic horizontal line pattern.
