Hello List,
Like many others, I am trying to get professional quality out of a
consumer product. The product in question is the Epson 1280. My goal is to
proof CMYK files captured with SinarBack digital camera. The captures are
assigned a custom RGB input profile of some flavor then converted to CMYK
via Knoll profiles or by <gasp> Margulis techniques. If desired, I then do a
Abs.Col. conversion to profile I created from Creo digital laminate proofer
with edited workflow whitepoint and dot gain simulation. I then hand this
file off to the Epson driver.
My Epson is using inexpensive 3rd party dyes, bulk ink system and printing
on BestProof 9150 paper. RGB printer profiles are created with PM4-4.1 using
TC 9.18 chart and Spectrolino/no UV filter, conversion from CMYK to printer
profile is RelCol. All profiles are made using 'MPH' media setting and NCA
workflow in the epson driver. I've tried PE4, 'vivid' ,etc, etc workflows
with results far, far worse than NCA.
The resulting prints actually look pretty good, except for the marginal
grey balance (even when using the new GTI illuminant) and the lack of any
dark browns, yellow and reds. This is a problem as many of my real jobs
include images on neutral backgrounds and or dark shadows, brown hair, etc.
It seems the more important the job, the worse the Epson driver proofs look.
When I look at the Epson RGB profiles in Colorthink 3D, They all exhibit the
large caved-in area along the shadow area of the b* axis. A smart friend of
mine who is having great success with his 1280's suggested a RIP.
I have always used Macintosh but am having difficulty finding a Mac RIP
(about $500) that offers individual ink limiting when a CMYK file is loaded.
The PC version of SpectrumPro by Colorbyte offers this exact feature but the
Mac version does not. : (
Is there a Mac RIP out there for the 1280 that supports true CMKY ink
limits? Even a simple non-color managed one that might be used in an iQueue
workflow.
The alternative...wintel?
Thanks,
