All,
With Seybold quickly approaching, and Jaguar launch still in progress,
I'm busier than a one-armed paper hanger. But I want to hit the high
notes of what's new in ColorSync for Jaguar.
Integrated
In Jaguar, ColorSync is fully integrated into the operating system,
providing true system-level color management. The level of integration
extends all the way from the Image Capture Architecture to the printing
system. Any Jaguar-compatible imaging device (e.g., digital camera,
scanner, printer) connected to Mac OS X now registers at least one
device profile. More on that later.
Turbocharged
In Jaguar, the AppleCMM is now the fastest CMM Apple has ever shipped.
Matrix-based RGB-to-RGB transformations have been vectorized (AppleCMM
uses the Velocity Engine, aka AltiVec). The preliminary numbers show an
average 2x speed improvement. RGB-to-CMYK conversions are on par with
earlier versions of Mac OS X, and are still faster and more accurate
than the AppleCMM on Mac OS 9.
Simplified
We've taken a number of steps to simplify using ColorSync. Some of
these fall under the category of integration. Again, more on that
later. There are many small refinements and clarifications as well. For
example, we've reduced the number of places a user can select a display
profile. The average user will only ever need to visit the Displays
system preference and click on the Color tab to choose an ICC monitor
profile. Also, today's imaging workflows have evolved far beyond a
static set of devices. The Devices tab has therefore been removed from
the ColorSync system preference. Advanced users can launch the
ColorSync Utility to manage registered device profiles, including
display profiles.
Advanced
The ColorSync Utility now checks for more common profile problems
(Profile First Aid), gives more information about installed profiles
(Profiles), and facilitates substituting custom profiles for registered
factory default profiles (Devices). The ColorSync Utility in Jaguar
allows users to double-click on a profile and see its tags (and edit
some), and see the profile's gamut in 3D.
Improved
Other areas have also been improved, including the default profiles.
The new Generic RGB Profile is based on the P22 phosphor set at a 1.8
gamma with a 6500:K white point. This brings the profile in line with
ISO recommendations. The new Generic CMYK Profile is based on the CGATS
TR 001 data set.
Over the coming weeks and months, both I and John Gnaegy will try to
provide more information on ColorSync in Mac OS X. The Apple ColorSync
web site will also be updated. Unfortunately, that may not be until
after Seybold.
In the meantime, feel free to ask questions. We'll try to answer them
as quickly as possible. Get a copy of Jaguar. It's a cool cat.

Hi All,
With the August 24th ship date of OS X 10.2 fast approaching, and with
the
new Macs announced today shipping with 10.2 already loaded, does anyone
have
any thoughts about what's better/different/worse in ColorSync in the new
operating system release?
For instance, the Device Profiles tab is gone altogether from the
ColorSync
System Preference.
Any information from the Apple folks or others on the list would be
welcome:
things to look forward to, things to watch out for.
Thanks.
-Rob
