Don't give up, pop for the RIP. After spending two days with an Epson 9600
and the ColorByte RIP (Print Suite- go to
http://www.colorbytesoftware.com/)
and getting dead nuts neutral prints with 6 of the 7 color inks (the RIP
doesn't use the yellow ink to print grayscale so no metamerism), I'm more
convinced than ever that all our efforts are being stymied by the Epson
driver. The quality of prints and the neutrality I saw with a CANNED profile
far exceed anything I've gotten close to producing through the Epson driver
with custom profiles and profile editing. The dither on Image Print also
blows away what you'd get from Epson plus 8000 levels of screening. There is
only so much a profile can do and when it has to work with the Epson driver,
it's more than that poor little profile can deal with. Give a profiling
routine a RIP that can control the printer at the ink level and canned
profiles (good ones) work wonderfully.
