I am developing new levels of hatred for ColroBlind. I tried to create a
RGB profile for my Epson with the intent of printing greyscale images as
RGB. In the profile creation options there are several checkboxes for
Absolute Grey, Absolute White, Grey Correction, 8 vs 16 bit, etc. Reading
the v4 release notes, these choices are vaguely described as follows:
"Absolute Gray: This option will create a profile with more balanced grays
but this may be at the cost of less accurate colors."
"Gray Correction: Again this option can be used when matching of grays
takes precedence over matching colours."
First off, at least spell color the same way everywhere you use it on a
page. Second, when I checked these two options (made sense to me as I was
shooting for a profile for printing RGB Greyscale files) the profile
applied a blue tint to what should have reproduced as white. I made an 18
step rgb stepwedge with increments of 15. The white patch was cyan!
Shouldn't something with a value of 255,255,255 not print? Moreover, the
grey balance was terrible! there were hues all over the place ranging from
green to magenta. Desaturating the PDI image and sending that through the
profile yielded a really icky greyscale print, especially in gradations.
Colors would go from blue to red in the fleshtone images. What gives? I'm
going to recreate the profile with those two boxes unchecked and see what
that does, then reintroduce those choices until I see which one caused the
whites to print cyan.
I think it would be hilarious to buy a $500 RIP for my $300 printer. Hell,
its only money. I've probably already spent at least that on paper and ink
trying to sort out the damn thing.
