Hello.
I have been reading quite alot about Colorsync and CMMs recently as I am in charge of possibly introducing CM into our pre-press dept. As my boss is reluctant to purchase any calibrating equipment and targeting the presses is out of the question. (Someone from another company told him it was an impossible endeavor) I am left with calibrating the monitors visually (using Gamma or Monitor control panels) while comparing to a printed piece from press. (Doing the best I can regarding lighting and other influences.)
Since I cannot use CMMs all the way to press, I can still try and get some consistency from monitor to proofers (epson 1520 through Birmy PowerRip and epson 5000 through ECRM Rip with epson 5000 plug-in) using ColorSync.
I have also recently read a good deal about how versions of Photoshop from v. 5 to 7 handle colorspaces and have a decent understanding of how to deal with Photoshop and colorSync.
I am, however left with this situation. I am leaving this job as of 08/30/02 and those I leave behind will have to deal with the steps I implement. They are less than knowledgeable in these matters so I want to keep things simple.
First, since we have been using Photoshop at default settings and getting decent results. I figure 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it' and am going to set Photoshop color settings at Color Management 'Off', use the RGB colorspace of Colormatch or the Monitor-AppleRGB and the default spaces for the other settings (CMYK, Grayscale, etc. )
If I keep Photoshop CM off and only set CM specs from the page-layout program when going to the proofers, will the image within the docs be managed or ignored?
In other words, does an image have to have an embedded profile to be recognized by a CMS?
Are any file types ignored by CMS'?
Thanks for any help
