Finding some oddities with PS 7 and files created with the Nikon D1X
that has us baffled.
Apparently,it is known that the color management settings on the
camera don't do what one might expect; in that, set color mode to
Adobe RGB and try to open the file in PS 7 and PS 7 reads the EXIF
metadata as sRGB. Set color mode to sRGB and the same thing happens.
Either way the file is tagged with sRGB metadata, (not that a profile
has been embedded, just tagged in the metadata).
A pretty good explanation:
lists.apple.com/archives/colorsync-users/2002/May/03/nikonandsrgb.004.txt
In OS 9.2 open a right-out-of-D1X JPEG file in PS 6.0.1 (adobe 98 as
RGB workspace, preserve embedded profiles, missing profiles on) and
the file opens up with the missing profile dialog box options. Open
the same file in PS 7 with same CM setup and you are prompted with
the mismatched profile dialogue box indicating sRGB as the embedded
profile. PS 6 doesn't read the metadata, PS 7 does, a new feature in
Photoshop. (A plug-in download is available to "Ignore EXIF data"
which returns a missing profile dialog box, with the usual options.)
Ok, this just shows the new PS 7 feature is working.
But with both PS's open, open the same D1X jpeg in the same manner
in both--that is, if you assign a profile to one assign the same to
the other, or don't color manage either-- and you get two vastly
different images. Values in the info palette are the same, but the
appearance of the images, very blocked up shadows in 7, normal in 6,
is night and day. Open the image in PS 7 alone and the same heavy
image appears. Open in PS 6 alone and things look as usual. No
competition for monitor control. And the same thing happens in OS X
10.2. Humph?
Check it out. Any suggestions?
