This is consistent with much of the research on gamut mapping
algorithms. When the source and destination have similar
gamuts, then clipping rather than compression often gives
better results (ICC translation, colorimetric rather than perceptual).
When the source gamut noticeably exceeds the destination, some sort
of compression is usually better.
