The preserve black option in many rip's, not just Best serves to map 100%
Black (K) to ink tank black. It does improve the sharpness in text on
certain printer models, and more importantly preserves the L appearance in
the text of a real press. Sometimes the ink tank black is coloured so a
colour managed black will still be desirable. It's an option that is largely
used in proofing. To have the choice is a plus for those rip's who have it.
As far as overprinting Postscript objects with color management; this seems
to be a frontier that is just being opened now.
Does ImagePrint colour managed overprinting coloured objects?
