In defense of the non-UV Eye-One, this sort of implies there were "unique"
UV problems with the Eye-One that other devices did not have. I don't think
this is/was the case. I would even go so far as to say that the Eye-One
would tend to have LESS issues with optical brighteners due to the light
source it uses. It uses essentially an incandescent-type bulb as opposed to
other light sources such as xenon that would tend to excite optical
brighteners in papers. Wouldn't it make sense that a light source that tends
to emit a portion in the UV range and thus have this returned to the sensor
as "visible" light through optical brighteners TEND to have more UV issues
than a light source that emits very little light in the UV spectrum to begin
with? Just an opinion.
Granted, I've pretty much only used Gretag instruments (all use basically
the same light source) but I've never really seen all these optical
brightener/UV issues in papers that others seem to report and I know I've
measured plenty of "brightened" papers as evidenced by my patented high-tech
paper qualifier (Radio Shack 18" blacklight party bulb!). In the past I've
had to deal with plenty of yellow-casted profiles but it never seemed to
matter whether I measured with/without a UV filter attached (Spectroscan).
At least in my case, I found it had more to do with how I linearized a
device, what inks/paper were used and which profiling testchart I measured
(the TC6.02 chart was notorious for this and now you'll find that it's been
eliminated). These days I rarely deal with the yellow cast problem, I've
moved on to other problems!
