I scan on a ColorGetter with ColorByte software. The software will
deliver 16 bit files (actually 12 bit plus padding).
I've scanned many 4x5 chromes both ways, and there is no question in
my mind that on some images 16 bit is way better but on most images
there is no difference.
If I am trying to dig out the last 1% of very deep shadow detail
(which requires a super-steep curve), the shadows in 16 bit look much
better than in 8 bit. Usually I simply apply the lightening curve to
the 16 bit scan, convert it to 8 bit and layer it with an unmodified
8 bit layer. I then use a layer mask to paint in just enough of the
drastically lightened image to give the right look to the shadows.
The same can apply to extreme highlights.
Also, images with very broad expanses of color have caused me great
problems in conversion to CMYK unless I do all the up front work and
conversion to CMYK in 16 bit.
