One theory of house design is that it should be optimized so that homes last
1.5 times the mortgage period, or a little over 20 years before requiring
replacement. Living in an area where many homes are a hundred, or even two
hundred years old, I certainly have a different viewpoint... but if you
accept the idea a one year warranty, and an average life to print head
clogging of 1.5 years, then Epson has this pretty well optimized. Calculate
the average consumer ink usage in that length of time, and you could def
inately fit that amount of ink into the printer as a sealed unit. Include the
required amount of paper, and you could sell a bundled system in a box not
much larger that the current one. And with an honest price, not based on
underpricing the printer and overpricing the consumables.
Sound like science fiction? Epson has already released an inkjet system that
has the ink, paper, service, and equipment costs rolled into one price; not a
sale price but a lease price. Consumables are ordered for you by the printer,
which is hooked to a phone line, and calls in for them automatically. They
then appear at your door on the delivery truck; all you do is push the
"print" button.
