Is there digital camera profiling software? Where can I read about
it? I seem to remember someone selling it with a Gretag Macbeth

Sure, there's the GretagMacbeth 2nd generation digicam target and
there's the digicam module for ProfileMaker. It clocked into
ProfileMaker 3.0 in early 2000 i.e. two years ago.
It's strange to think that the ICC spec was in what was it, '93.
Stefan Brues while at FOGRA had yanked as many strings as he could
find to get the ball rolling for the conference that was the kick-off
for the ICC, and alongside formed LOGO to try to implement software
for people who wanted to custom characterize their color devices. In
those days a GretagMacbeth SPM manual spot spectro cost USD 12,000
... that's what I give my 11 year old as pocket money, she'd be
miffed at less -:).
The first version of ProfileMaker was for ColorSync 1 and used matrix
profiles even for printers. Then there was a sea of ProfileMaker
versions ... ProfileMaker CRD for Tektronix, ProfileMaker Proof
(can't remember what it did any more), a version that built profiles
using a scanner and not a spectro ... too many products and too much
diversification in a simple effort to stay alive. That was simplified
and streamlined with the GM takeover.
