If anyone has experienced difficulties in using ICC profiles with the
Epson 1270 printer, this may be the explanation. I think the problem is
in the driver, but of course corrupt installations are always possible.
The list will let me know...
The behavior of the Epson 1270 driver when No Color Adjustment is
selected in the Advanced settings dialog depends on the current
positions of the BCS,CMY sliders available in the Color Controls dialog
box. The BCS sliders produce large color changes while the CMY sliders
tend to make smaller changes in gray balance. (BCS = Brightness,
Contrast, Saturation and CMY are the usual colors.)
This has been observed in driver version 6.3aE (which appears as 6.30E
in the print dialog box) running on Mac OS8.6. with CS2.6. This is the
current driver listed on the Epson www site. The problem has been
confirmed on two G3s -- my Blue/White and a friend's Beige. Other print
dialog settings are Matte Paper Heavyweight, 1440 dpi printing, High
Quality halftoning and High Speed Off.
So far as I can see, the Gamma and Mode (Photo, Auto, Vivid) settings in
Color Controls are disabled when No Color Adjustment is selected.
Similarly, under PhotoEnhance4, I find no differences with Tone On, Off,
Vivid, and Normal. This was checked because when settings are saved from
any of the Advanced options, some of the other Advanced settings are
also saved. However, different settings are preserved depending on
whether one saves from Color Controls or No Color Adjustment. It's a
mess.
There is also a difference between printing using Color Controls with
all the sliders at zero and printing with all the sliders at zero and No
Color Adjustment selected.
Obviously, if one selects No Color Adjustment and never ever touches the
other Advanced options, an ICC workflow may perform just fine. In my
case, not initially knowing enough about ICC workflows and not having
the means to make profiles, I tweaked the Color Controls to print very
good Macbeth Color Checkers on the various papers I use. Eventually I
ordered a custom profile of the printer in a strange state for the one
paper I really care about (MP-H) and could never figure out why the
Epson canned and custom profiles were so radically different. But no
matter, they worked differently on different days and neither worked
well. Except on one test the custom profile was superb. Once and only
once. Apparently as I worked and experimented, the state of the printer
driver was continuously changing. Of course, I always thought No Color
Adjustment meant what it said. My mistake.
Finally, I apologize if this problem has recently been posted. As usual,
I am more than a month behind in reading the list but it is always worth
the time to read. Thanks to all!
John
