John,
I see your point, but it has nothing to do with profiling. Yes, some people
think that profiling an image fixes all the bad things (I hope no one on
this list does) about it. Your point is less about color management in
practice and more about bad images in general.
Image capture, color correction, and targeting are all graphic arts
incorporating one heckuvalot of science. Any of them take a good deal of
practice before finally mastered. That you have incoming images that are
awful is no surprise, given the reasons that you listed in your post. But
these bad images existed before color management was even an every-day
phrase. Bruce's initial point was that high-bit scanning on a good capture
device will help solve many problems inherent with image manipulation. And I
agree.
