I agree with Jon's point that a solid foundation in the core fundamentals of
color is essential in any printing process. I also agree with Bruce. Every
day I am dealing with a new printer who has gone digital. Instead of
working to be able to print to reliable standards which they have been doing
for years, they are setting up closed loop systems. Many times their closed
loop profiles are of flawed plating and printing.
My customers have many legacy files which are separated for LoGain
Commercial Matchprint. It would be a nightmare to re-purpose files on a
daily basis for every Mom and Pop printer. It is essential that the printer
work backwards from the press. Achieving proper gray balance and dot gain.
Methods may include ink formulation, blankets, fountain solutions and lastly
compensation curves in the platesetter, if necessary. Careful measurement
to insure repeatability at press time is very important.
By setting up to known standards, printers can broaden their customer base
instead of "closing them out of the loop"!
