the utility offers to repair the profiles. But do I really want it to
set the white to D50 on those profiles which were built that way?? And
will it really fix the tags properly?

If the tags of a profile don't conform to the spec, ColorSync Utility raises a warning and can optionally try to repair the profile. As far as which errors are fixable and which aren't, that depends on how badly screwed up the tag is. An attempt is made to repair the tag as opposed to modifying it randomly and hoping for the best...so there is some thought involved. Still the safest thing is to run Verify first, then save copies of any profiles with errors before hitting Repair. There's a caution to that effect in the info text in Profile First Aid. So there's the standard disclaimer. From personal experience I haven't found any profiles that were worse after being repaired than before. If you do find a profile that gets munged by ColorSync Utility let us know, but we haven't heard of any so far.

The "header WP is not D50" is a minor deviation from the spec, you can fix that without worries. Since the value is often arrived at through calculations, differences due to rounding and precision can appear between one profile maker and another, so the spec suggests copying a specific D50 value into that field instead of using a calculated value. If the tag has a calculated value instead of the suggested specific value, you get the error.

ColorSync Utility is a strict judge of profile correctness, very useful to developers of profile creation software and developers who ship profiles. Its ability to repair truly damaged or problematic profiles is also beneficial to users.
