The Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam (Rembrandt's Nachtwacht) uses the CIE-Lab D50
standard to store the digital masterfile.
The new slides (Kodak material on 5 x 7 inch) are scanned on a Heidelberg
Topaz scanner in LinoColor.
The CIE-Lab file is compared with the original painting and corrected for
dust etc.
Correction can be done in CIE-Lch or (for traditional retouchers) in RGB.
That corrected CIE-Lab file in 16-bit is stored as the "digital master". It
matches the original as much as possible.
From that file all versions (RGB-print, Fuji, RGB-web. RGB-intranet and
CMYK-catalogue) are made using ICC-profiles. Partly inhouse, partly via
external services.
Recently the museum started to use digital camera's and they hope to extend
that application because the demand for the new digital masterfiles is huge.
If I remember correctly there is a kind of information interchange via the
Luna organization in San Diego.
www.luna-imaging.com created the insight software for storage and retrieval
via the web.
Cees de Jonge (email@hidden) prepared a detailed description how
the Rijksmuseum workflow is implemented. That's however in Dutch.
You can reach Cees at (email@hidden).
Perhaps Luna could provide more info on the standards on lighting of
paintings, the creation of masterfiles etc.
Hope this helps,
Regards, Henk
