OS X and Epson inkjet printer profiles

I was beginning to learn and use ColorSync color management under OS 9 when OS X arrived. As everyone knows, Epson eventually released OS X printer drivers for their products, but where are the machines' color profiles? Are they no longer necessary?

I emailed Epson, asking if an ICC color profile existed for the Epson 980 ColorStylus for use with OS X. Rather than simply answer yes or no, they replied with a lengthy cut-and-pasted textbook description of color management instead. Typical. I posed the question a second time and was told I only had to open System Preferences>ColorSync>Devices and select CMYK for my output devices.

Is their solution a suitable substitute for a printer color profile?
