White vs. black: it really does matter what you're measuring. For measuring
some textiles with a Spectrolino here at Levi's we use black and get a much
closer match, and some --especially the lighter, thinner ones -- REQUIRE a
white backing for a decent reading. It makes sense. I can't comment on the
science, just share my experience that with the textiles we measure day-in,
day-out, there has been no one right answer.
I've found that it pretty much boils down to, if one backing doesn't
produce good results, try a different one. When you get results that
you can live with, KEEP A RECORD of which backing you used.
When I profiled the Macworld press (talk about chasing a moving
target with a rubber ruler!), I found that I absolutely had to
measure over a stack of blank stock. Black backing gave results that
were way too dark, white backing gave results that were hopelessly
optimistically bright where there was paper white on the obverse of
the target, and hopelessly dark when there was black type on the
obverse of the target...
