Stephen, Andrew, thanks for your help so far.

The scans were actually made using the fixed end points. I was wrong
when I mentioned previously that I had used the scanner calibrated
profile. In fact I recall now scanning using the LUTID ICC table. I must
say that I had to apply heavy corrections through the curves layer in
order to have a good image in the first place.

What RGB workspace was in use in ver6? Adobe RGB?
Yes, I think and hope so, for some at least. I just made some trials
and for some images, applying Adobe RGB produces the right colors and
density. For others, it does not work, but I have had pretty good
results using an old monitor profile. For those, PS was probably set for
using the monitor profile as workspace... stupid I know.

Andrew, as I recall now, I used the LUT ICC table, that's probably why
applying the scanner profile does not work.
I must say that with the improved version 3.1 of EversmartScan, being
able to scan using the custom scanner profile into a proper workspace
has at last led to color consistency! I still have to find a way to keep
the screen colors accurate when I save for the web. It seems that
converting to sRGB has some ill effects on some colors, the images are
cooler and have increased cyan shadows.
Kind regards
Paul
